Grand Theatre Review

About

Grand Theatre Review is an independent-minded publication for people who enjoy thinking about how theatre is made and what happens when a play meets an audience. We explore writing, performance, stagecraft, history and interpretation without assuming specialist knowledge.

What we look at

A production is built from many interacting choices: a line delivered one way rather than another, a space arranged to focus attention, or a pause that changes the weight of a scene. Our coverage follows those choices across plays and performance traditions, explaining relevant terms as we go.

Who it is for

Our readers may be regular theatregoers, people returning to theatre after a long pause, students, makers or anyone curious about a performance they have seen. The aim is not to prescribe a correct response, but to offer ways of noticing and talking about what is on stage.

How we approach it

We separate description from interpretation, give context where it helps, and make room for more than one reading. We do not claim that a single production or convention represents theatre as a whole; each piece has a defined subject and a clear point of view.

Our point of view

A play is more than its plot

Theatre happens through choices made in real time. We look at how those choices work together, offering curious theatregoers language for what they notice.
